I am out 18 years now, hard to believe how quickly time has gone by.
during my time OTJ there were many events that could have been points in time or incidents that would have led some to say job died. Some were:
knapp commission
layoffs
cardillo
bumpers
buddy boys scandal
thompkins Sq Park
Larry Davis
Dirty 30
out of town Brown
Dinkins
Mollen Commission
Abner Louima
Howard Safir
but for me the job died when Giuliani was elected. Yes he was pro cop in public because it benefited him but he ruined the job and took money out of our pockets. Compsta became an absolute torture chamber and all of the experienced old bosses left in record time only to be replaced by a new culture of yes men at the top. Anemone and Maples became the Grand inquisitors and treated folks like sh1t. Then when it came time to reward us for all the sacrifices that we made and he gave us zeros and a big FU. Frankly, after 1995 the job was dead to me. I am shocked I lasted another five years.

Giuliani was NEVER pro-cop. He was pro-control and cops were just a tool to that end. He made a living locking-up cops before he ran for mayor.

I would have to say Dinkins was one of our worst Mayors. I did make some money under him, Crown Heights and Washington Heights riots shelled out some good OT for me. If you lived in NYC, he was the worst. Guiliani was one of the best Mayors if you lived in NYC.
I retired last year and would say I had a good run. A few weeks ago I got together with some good friends from the job. We all will never forget working Ground Zero, Fresh Kills and the morgue after Sept. 11th. I was down there for about 6 months on and off, some days were very surreal.

The job died August 1997 for me. I was in the 70 pct at the time. When Sharpton and his minions descended upon the pct hurling death threats at us, destroying private property on the block, and causing general chaos without any ramifications, the job was all but dead. The final nail was being threatened by an FBI agent to come to Fort Hamilton to be interrogated.
What an eye-opener with 3 years on the job. A lot of good INNOCENT people got hurt because of it. Sad.

Watching my van burn to the ground during the Washington Heights riot and realizing that it was all because Dinkins had aligned himself with the local criminals, pushed the cops under the bus and then used city $ to fly the perps carcass to the D. R.

Dark ,female, pointed shoe, midget, left handed, pee standing, sitting, liked hot sauce, had egg allergy, tooth sucker, no teeth, all in the name of diversity. Also didn't like the mandatory wearing of the vests. I know I will get dogpiled on here for it. But it should be my choice. I never wore it in the summer heat, when optional. Even when mandatory, I changed after roll call to take that hot box off. I'll take my chances in a gun battle.
I remember getting a scratch from the Sgt. on a foot post in the 77, circa 1986. He noticed my lack of vest. He asked if I was scared of getting shot. It was like 95 degrees. I said, "no, I prefer the comfort. I will die when my time is up."

For me it was when the DD5 system went online and could be viewed in real time instead of when the fives were sent up.Talk about micro managing.

Twohands thanks. Walked into work with a guy one day, he had a message waiting for him. He called his wife told her to leave work and meet him at 1 PP he was being promoted, had no idea. He was immediately assigned to community affairs, never to be seen or heard of again.

They did not take one cent or an extra vial, all was vouchered. If you believe a bunch of scumbag drug dealers over four good cops, who I knew personally, perhaps you were on the wrong job. They were flaked and everyone in our command, and all others I thought, knew so. |
