Hey, it's really no big deal for the Det. Even if he was convicted it's only a misd. so now he can still retire and get his pension.
And you know this wasn't his first time stealing, only the first time he got caught.

No he's not. He's an embarrassment to DELATORRE alone. No one else gives a flying F***.
Delatorre was probably hiding him on behalf of an old friend on the job, or the sgt was an old friend himself.
Considering what we've seen being arrested from the NYPD lately, this guy is far from an "embarrassment," but more like a poor sad sack.
The REAL embarrassments are the big bosses...like D.Is....getting locked up for being chauffeurs for diamond merchants who demand and accept cash is plain envelopes, then allowed to retire.

First time caught shoplifting - 20 and a year.
Second time caught - 30 days suspension, indefinite suspension w / pay until the trial plays out and then termination. I've seen it play out before.

I remember a guy back in the mid90s changing the stickers on meat. At least he was probably making 35 grand back then. I broke his balls for about 3 years over it

How many times did he take something during a search warrant or whatever...and risk the pensions of everyone involved. It's all fun and games until you're making statements under GO 15 and they can fire you if you make a mis-statement. I've seen a lot of guys get CRUSHED by trying to 'do the right thing' and sticking to the story only to have the real knucklehead change his story and screw everyone else. Take your Pension and RUN Detective. PLEASE. For the sake of every cop that had to work with you for the last 10 years while you developed your sticky fingers. |

He may not be allowed to retire if he is restricted pending an investigation. He may remain in that limbo for 18 months. A cop who is a thief deserves the same treatment as a perp. He's not one of us. He's one of "them". Those we have to chase, wrestle with, who spit on us, who have embarrassed the job and every other honest member of the service. Show him the door, with a boot print on his ass.

It’s my recollection that provided you have put in the time, you can retire at any point you choose. I believe that NYPD can only deny you the famous “good guy letter”

I believe that NYPD can only deny you the famous “good guy letter” That's a bit of confusion. Just because you have 20+ years does not mean the dept cannot charge you then fire you. The part that you are referring to is AFTER an MOS has retired and is convicted of a misdemeanor, that his pension cannot be revoked. This Sgt is still an active MOS, so his pension is NOT a safe bet. You can be fired after a dept trial and lose everything. An example are the guys in the MOS licensing division. One MOS was modified with 25+ years on the job, was told not to retire and did attempt to try, was immediately flagged and fired. The job can do things that does not require a civil conviction. |

Unanswered questions. Why wasn't he a collar? Is IAD looking to jam up responding MOS? Why did the shmuck ID himself as an MOS if he wasn't collared. Why did tell astory give this cop so much OT when other's are capped? Could this story be bullshit?

As long as he is modified or restricted, he risks being denied his pension if the dept has an open investigation he still risks being fired. The job can deny the retirement and keep you on active status until the investigation is closed. Since he is a boss, they will most likely try to do a wink and a nod. My prediction is a 30 and a year hit, and let him retire. If he was a cop, he'd be fired. |
