This morning I decide to go around the corner to the local diner to have breakfast. This is something I NEVER do. Either I have a buttered bagel or my wife makes low calorie pancakes.
I'm sitting in the diner when a woman I know comes in and sits down with me and had coffee and a toasted bun.
Shortly after that three members of the local VFW Post (of which I am a member) come in and sit down. I thought perhaps they were coming from the local funeral home and that a member had passed away. As it turns out, they had come from the VA Hospital where they had distributed fruit baskets to wounded warriors. This is truly a mitzvah (good deed).
They order coffee and toast and buns, etc. So they are sitting there shooting the breeze and I am in deep conversation with my lady friend. The waitress passes by and I grab her attention and tell her to give me the check for the VFW guys. No big deal, right?
So they finish their little eats and the next thing I know the waitress brings out eggs and pancakes and toast, etc. etc etc. I'm thinking to myself: "Self, why didn't you wait a few minutes to see what else they might order." lol lol lol
So the bill comes to $60.00. You know what - who cares. That's my part for not being able to go with them to the VA Hospital. They thank me profusely - I don't have the guts to tell them I thought they were only having coffee and buns. So I come out like a hero in the eyes of real heroes.
If you should happen to see a member of the armed forces having a bite to eat, think about picking up the check. If for no other reason, go over and thank them and shake their hand. What a lousy time of the year to be away from your family.

but if I had it would have only made me feel that much better about myself.
