Bill Clinton among possibilities for caretaker for New York senate seat
Seatwarmer ... Bill Clinton has been named as a possible caretaker of his wife's New York senate seat.
"Caretaker" may get New York senate seat
Bill Clinton among the suggestions
Actual election scheduled for 2010
Former US president Bill Clinton is among several people being touted as a possible "caretaker" for his wife's New York senate seat.
Politicos are openly discussing the possibility of someone looking after the senate seat until 2010, when elections will be held.
As the process of picking Senator Hillary Clinton's replacement gets messy, the option may become increasingly attractive to Governor David Paterson, who has sole authority to name a successor.
Mr Paterson has made it clear in recent days that he's getting annoyed by the constant jockeying by supporters of high-powered hopefuls including Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late president John F. Kennedy; state Attorney-General Andrew Cuomo, son of former governor Mario Cuomo and half a dozen members of Congress.
A big name like Bill Clinton or Mario Cuomo could have an immediate impact for New York in the Senate while letting the large field of hopefuls fight it out in 2010, according to three Democratic Party advisers.
A spokesman for Mr Clinton said yesterday that the former president was not interested in the job.
