Time to leave NY entirely!  That's too bad because I love it here but I am not rich. Sometimes it seems that state politicians are as bad as the NYC mayor, who wants to ensure that only the rich "elite" (like him and his friends) can afford to live there. |

I just paid around $5,400 school taxes in September for the Spackenkill District in Dutchess. The previous year they were $4,400. The county, town, fire district, etc. taxes were $3,771 last February.
So he's going to raise all the taxes and not cut spending, in fact raising spending?

Pretty much the same here LM. I paid a little over 7K in school taxes to the town of Hempstead, and another 4+K in property taxes to the village. I don't even have any kids in school...or otherwise.

Well, hold on to your balls because you won't be able to go to the movies, drink a regular soda or fruity dring, buy clothes, take a taxi, without being taxed. Oh, like that STAR check you get every year? Hope you made a photocopy before you cashed the last one because it's all you'll get.

I just happened to check the assessment with the county and guess what, the fair market value of my house dropped $12K but the taxed assessment is still the same. Go figure!!! BASTIDS!!!

The Fart Tax idea is nothing new. Our VERY liberal gov't. had proposed this in the early 2000's and again in 2007. It was just one thing in many that caused their political demise; they were soundly voted out of office this past election, much to my delight. Ahhhh! You can't go on a website to find your market value. You have to go to your town.
Also, market value is not defined by a particular town. Market value is defined as The most probable price which a property should bring in a competitive and open market under all conditions requisite to a fair sale. Know what that means? It's what each buyer and seller, given all the info on a property, without duress, will agree to. So even if the town says your house is worth 200K, in this market, the value may only be 150K.
OK, back from the real estate lesson. nycco, you can call the town and find out when grievance day is. I don't know, they keep changing it. Basically, your assessment:market value ratio should be 50%. If yours is higher, you're paying too much.

2 1/2 years since I left Orange county........ Come on down the weather is fine and the taxes are finer in Carolina!! For now anyway. Oh and by the way I havent see one man in a black coat with a black hat driving a mini van in 2 1/2 years!!  |

nycco what site did you go to to find the fair market value? The Orange County Real Property Tax Assessment website: propertydata.orangecountygov.com/imate/search.aspxIt's not REAL fair market value, it's the assessed value that the county, town, and village uses to tax you at. So although it's not a real figure of what my home is worth it means a lot when the bastids tax me at the old market value although it's not current. What gets me is the county is the one that posted the lower figure, NOT ME!!! ;D |
