Colonia man indicted in death of Perth Amboy cop

A Middlesex County grand jury indicted a 24-year-old Colonia man today on charges of causing a drunken-driving crash that killed a Perth Amboy police officer and injured two passengers after running a red light and broadsiding their patrol car.
Sean McGuirk, an aspiring model and actor whose brother is a Woodbridge police officer, was charged with aggravated manslaughter and vehicular homicide in the Aug. 21 death of Thomas Raji, a 31-year-old police officer who was expecting his first child.
The grand jury, sitting in New Brunswick, also charged McGuirk with two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of assault by auto, contending he seriously injured another officer, Matthew Mercurio, 43, and Gregory Efford, a 37-year-old prisoner who was being transported to the Middlesex County jail when the patrol car was stuck.
Middlesex County authorities previously said McGuirk was intoxicated as he drove on Green Street in Woodbridge, ignored the red lights at both the northbound and southbound crossings of the Route 1 intersection, and slammed into the patrol car.
McGuirk was charged after blood-alcohol testing showed a reading of 0.107 percent. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.
McGuirk, who is free on $100,000 bail, has pleaded not guilty. No trial date has been set.
If convicted, he faces up to 50 years in prison, Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Nicholas Sewitch said.
