There was a time “way back when” (no comments concerning chariots and spears, please) when it seemed like we would have a cop killed every holiday season (Thanksgiving to Jan 2). We didn’t have to wear our vests back then.
The thought occurred to me to create a poster with the photo of cops who had been shot and/or killed during this period with the plea to wear your vest and be especially careful during the holiday season.
On the bottom would be a Xmas tree and next to it would be a Chanukah bush with a menorah.
The bottom line would be: “Give your family the best holiday gift of all – YOU!!!”
So I go over to a couple of printers that I know to try and price the project.
As my Italian friend says: “Forgeddaboutit” Don’t forget I would need a couple of hundred posters to place in every precinct, squad and patrol unit (TPF, Highway, CWAC, etc.) I was the sole provider for the family – my wife didn’t work. Even with a “special discount” I just couldn’t afford it.
So, I go to the PBA & SBA for whom the cost of the project would be like a grain of sand on a beach. NO GOOD, KID. I was frothing at the mouth. SOBs. Probably worried that a common cop/delegate couldn’t be acknowledged as having a good idea. At least the Department gave you a coffee cup back then (I’ve got 4).
So with the above in mind, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, wear your vest, be especially careful and remember the following heroes (1960-Present):
