We’re redecorating our apartment pretty much from top to bottom.
For the living room we’re looking for a new sofa, 2 chairs, a coffee table, a wall unit/entertainment center, a 42” plasma TV, and possibly a new carpet.
The dining room needs a new dining room table with 6 chairs.
As for my den, I need a lot of shelving because I have a zillion pieces of police memorabilia plus stuff from my Army days and items relative to my son who was murdered on 9/11.
We’ve been going to a number of furniture stores looking for the above and comparing prices. We’ve found a few items that interested us.
Then I was watching TV and saw a commercial for Direct Buy. So we decided to pay them a visit. The first thing we found out is that you can’t just walk into their showrooms; you have to make an appointment. I knew there was a “membership fee” but I had no idea of how much it is. So we called and made an appointment – specific day – specific time. Yesterday was our appointment. We were one of 8 couples who had appointments for the same time.
First thing was to watch a couple of videos about how they work. Very impressive. Then they take you around to sample rooms and tell you how much of a savings you can obtain if you become a member. On and on and yet no mention of how much the membership fee is.
One thing I can say is that they sell EVERYTHING from shoes to a house full of furniture or a set of golf balls. You make a purchase based on what you see in hundreds of catalogues that are grouped according to type of item.
Okay, okay – how much is the membership fee. For you, because you’re a friend of mine – a mere $5,000.00!!!!!! That’s for 3 years. After that if you want to continue your membership it’s a yearly fee of $623. Another little stickler is that whatever you purchase is delivered to their facility. If you want it delivered to your residence you have to make separate plans to get it from the facility. They'll deliver it to your home from their faciity but, of course, that's a separate fee and they didn't say how much it was. There is also a 6% handling fee on the purchase.
I have to say that their prices are very good. But as far as I was concerned it didn’t pay for me to join because we didn’t intend to purchase enough items to make the fee worthwhile. We probably could have saved a couple of thousand dollars making the membership fee a losing proposition. So what good is this place? I would probably strongly recommend it for anyone who is buying a house and needs to completely furnish the home. I think you would save tens of thousands of dollars.
In their favor I will say that there was absolutely no pressure. The salesman approached us to try and get us to join but when we told him our position he didn’t try to get us to join – so that’s in their favor.
So if this sounds like it would be to your advantage, go to it.
