Probe clears cops of brutality in gun arrest

A gun-toting Dorchester 20-year-old whose family claimed police brutality will spend the next two years in the can after authorities determined his injuries were the result of a clumsy bicycle crash while fleeing police.
Nathaniel Rackeem Rivers initially told police he was carrying a loaded weapon to the Hub’s gun-buyback program on May 25.
The embarrassing truth: He had flashed his loaded .38 caliber revolver on Brunswick Street, rode his bike away from cops as they pursued him - and then, while traveling downhill on Howard Avenue and looking back at cops in pursuit, he took a header into an umarked cruiser, according to court records.
He was treated by an EMT at the scene.
“This defendant was carrying a loaded gun he had no intention of turning in,” said Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley. “That statement was just as false as his allegation of mistreatment by the brave officers who took it away from him.”
Last week, Rivers pleaded guilty to all charges: unlawfully carrying a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a loaded handgun and resisting arrest. He was sentenced to two years in the house of correction and three years’ probation upon release.
His case was fast-tracked through Conley’s vaunted Gun Court, which he created along with a top judge in 2006.
A Boston Globe report following Rivers’ arrest quoted his mother as saying, “They just kept beating him and beating him and beating him.”
After crashing into a cruiser, Rivers refused to submit, violently resisting arrest. In the struggle, cops recovered the gun and six live rounds.
According to a police report, Rivers admitted to police that night, “I need it for protection.”
