China’s new aircraft carrier the Shandong could confront other nations in disputed South China Sea, state media says
Commentary warns of face-to-face encounters related to ‘freedom of navigation’ operations, being conducted by nations including the US
The new vessel would be used for combat according to state controlled media.
China’s first home-built aircraft carrier, the Shandong, will focus its mission on the disputed South China Sea and having face-to-face encounters with foreign vessels, state media said on Wednesday.
The new warship, commissioned on Tuesday, would be used for combat, mainly for gaining control of seas claimed by China, rather than focusing only on training missions like China’s first aircraft carrier the Liaoning, the reports said.
“The main strategic focus of the Shandong will be on waters around the South China Sea,” a commentary published by a social media account affiliated with Communist Party mouthpiece People’s Daily said on Wednesday.
“Recently, military vessels and aircraft from some nations have been carrying out so-called freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea, stirring up troubles and challenging China’s national sovereignty,” it said.
“The aircraft strike group headed by the Shandong will be deployed to the South China Sea. It is very likely that it will have face-to-face encounters with foreign military vessels.”
The commentary did not name any nation, but Beijing has repeatedly accused the United States of infringing its maritime territory and provoking tensions by sending military vessels and aircraft to disputed parts of the sea that are also claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.
US freedom of navigation operations have challenged what Washington has said is Chinese activity limiting movement in the South China Sea. Washington has complained about China building islands on reefs and shoals, and installing military facilities on them.

Chinese President Xi Jinping officially commissioned the new warship, previously known as the Type 001A, on Tuesday in Sanya, a port in the southern island province of Hainan. The ceremony was attended by officials from the Southern Theatre Command, which oversees operations in the South China Sea.
The vessel last month passed through the Taiwan Strait to conduct “scientific trials and routine training” and headed to the South China Sea.
“The Shandong is aimed at achieving domination in both the air and sea,” the commentary said.

The ship was expected to be officially commissioned in April, but its trial phase took longer than some military observers had expected, suggesting that it had suffered technical problems. The aircraft carrier underwent its first sea trial in May last year.
It will be able to carry 36 J-15 fighter jets, compared with the Liaoning’s capacity of 24, and 40 aircraft in total, including Z-9 helicopters and KJ-600 early-warning planes.
Taiwan says it will forcefully expel Chinese jets next time they cross Taiwan Strait median line
The carrier was constructed by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry in Liaoning province, in China’s northeast. The company started work on the vessel in 2013.
The People’s Daily commentary said the two ships would complement each other, despite the Liaoning being based in Qingdao, in eastern China, and the Shandong in Sanya, in the far south. The Chinese navy would test the combat-readiness of an aircraft carrier strike group headed by the two ships, it said.

“One carrier will provide defence and auxiliary operations for aircraft, while the fighter jets on the other carrier will be free to carry out offensive missions,” it said.
The South China Sea – rather than the calmer East China Sea and the narrower Yellow Sea, between China and the Korean peninsula – is also the best place to train and test Chinese aircraft carriers’ combat capability, according to Hong Kong-based military expert Song Zhongping.

“The Shandong ship might have achieved a certain level of initial operation capability through its several past sea trials, but only the wind, heat and immense area of the South China Sea could test its real combat standard, and whether it is able to fight effectively with destroyers, frigates and other warships.”
