Seagram’s heiress Clare Bronfman pleads guilty in Nxivm sex cult case





Seagram’s liquor heiress Clare Bronfman on Friday pleaded guilty for her role in the upstate sex-slave cult Nxivm, in a deal that could see her locked up for years.

Shortly after, the group’s longtime bookkeeper also copped a plea in the case — leaving only Nxivm leader Keith Raniere to stand trial.

Bronfman wept softly in Brooklyn Federal Court as she pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to conceal and harbor an illegal alien for financial gain, and fraudulent use of identification.

“Your honor, I was afforded a great gift from my grandfather and father,” Bronfman said, but added that “privilege … does not come with the ability to break the law … It comes with a greater responsibility to uphold the law.”

Dressed in a cream-colored shirt, billowy pants and a blue and white scarf, the 40-year-old whiskey scion admitted that she “did harbor an individual” who she helped “live and work in our country in a way that would be undetectable.”

Prosecutors say Bronfman — a high-ranking member of Nxivm’s board who used her family fortune to help bankroll the group — aided Raniere in helping a foreigner enter the US and to pay off debts he racked up on the credit card of his dead girlfriend.

It wasn’t clear from Bronfman’s plea or indictment who the illegal immigrant was or where they came from.

She faces up to 25 years behind bars on both charges at her July 25 sentencing — although sentencing guidelines call for between 21 and 26 months — and will also have to forfeit $6 million and pay additional restitution to some victims.
As they left court, Bronfman’s attorney, Mark Geragos, said she didn’t have a cooperation agreement with the feds — but when asked if she would testify against Raniere he added, “she will comply with any lawful process”

Nxivm’s former accountant, Kathy Russell then pleaded guilty to visa fraud — admitting that in 2014, she “knowingly and intentionally presented a document to the U.S. consulate in Mexico” to suppose a visa for a woman named Loreta Garza Davila.

She said she falsely claimed that Garza worked for Nxivm, when really she “spent most of her time running and developing a separate company called Rainbow Cultural Garden.”

Rainbow Cultural Gardens is an international network of schools tied to Raniere, according to a Miami New Times report.

“I know what I did is wrong,” Russell told the judge before hanging her head for a long period.

She faces up to 10 years in the slammer, but guidelines call for six to 12 months.

Bronfman, Raniere, Russell, “Smallville” TV actress Allison Mack, Nxivm co-founder Nancy Salzman and her daughter Lauren Salzman were all arrested last year on various charges related to the Albany-area organization.

Among other things, prosecutors allege that Raniere created a secret master-slave group within Nxivm called DOS, where women were duped into handing over damaging collateral about themselves — and then were extorted into suffering through near-starvation diets, being “branded” with Raniere’s initials or being pressured to have sex with him.

Mack, Raniere’s purported right-hand woman, last week pleaded guilty to being one of the group’s masters, tearfully confessing that she forced slaves “to perform services for me.”

Lauren Salzman and her mom pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy in March.



Russell’s is set for July 31.

Raniere’s lawyers had tried to bar the images from being entered into evidence at trial, arguing that the government’s warrant only applied to on or after Jan. 1, 2015 — and that the images of then-15-year-old Jane Doe 2 were from 2005.



But Judge Nicholas Garaufis ruled otherwise.



“Although the Images were created in 2005, they are within the scope of the … warrant because they are evidence of multiple Subject Offenses involving Raniere that occurred in 2015 or later,” Garaufis wrote.



Raniere is facing various charges, including racketeering conspiracy involving acts of child sexual exploitation and possession of child pornography. He’s accused of running an upstate cult featuring a secret society, called DOS, where women were starved, groomed to have sex with him and branded with his initials.



“The female in the Images allegedly became a DOS slave and the Images share similarities with the collateral provided by other DOS slaves […], so the Images may be relevant to Raniere’s motive, intent, or modus operandi in forming DOS,” Garaufis rules. “Thus, the Images are ‘evidence regarding the formation and structure of DOS,’ which makes them evidence of Subject Offenses (sex trafficking, forced labor, and extortion) occurring in 2015 or later.”



Prosecutors have said they also want to introduce evidence from another woman “Jane Doe X,” who claims she was raped by Raniere when she was 12 and 13. Raniere has denied those accusations.



Garaufis has yet to rule on that motion.

At this point, nothing should surprise me when it comes to accusations against Smallville actress Allison Mack and Keith Raniere, two prominent members of alleged sex cult NXIVM. Over the past year, disturbing reports of sex slaves, diet control, and human branding have come from former members of the cult, as well as an extensive piece in The Hollywood Reporter.

The piece mostly corroborates earlier reports of Mack's deep involvement in the organization, and allegations that she was instrumental in finding, recruiting, and controlling the women who joined Raniere's inner circle, DOS (Dominus Obsequious Sororium, or Master Over Slave Women), as sex slaves. It also sheds some disturbing light on what exactly Raniere required of these women and what he believed their purpose was. Now, months after the alleged cult made headlines in 2018, NXIVM is back in the news as those allegedly involved in the twisted saga, like Mack and Raniere, are making their pleas in court.


But to understand what those pleas mean, let's take a look at some of the most disturbing and wild details in the case.

"If one woman is having an issue, it hurts Keith, and if he's hurting, you're hurting," a former member explained. "So if you do something he doesn't like, you get an army of women, sister wives, coming after you. You get ostracized. No one wants to socialize with you unless you get back in line."

From early on, the organization seemed to prime its members for polygamy, but this turned out to be a springboard for Raniere's more controversial views about gender roles and incest.

"Keith said to me multiple times that it was OK for little girls to pleasure their fathers sexually," another former member confessed. "He thought that was fine."
In March 2019, Raniere was handed additional charges of child pornography. In his trial, the New York Times reports that prosecutors will show pictures of a reportedly 15-year-old naked girl in Raniere's bed.

The NYT also reports that at one NXIVM group called “Society of Protectors,” women were made to wear fake cow udders over their breasts while men insulted them.

In the grand jury testimony obtained by the New York Post, former members alleged that Raniere had sex with "sex slaves" in houses belonging to people like co-founder Nancy Saltzman and actress Allison Mack.
“The bed was elevated, and a hot tub was underneath the bed,” a former member said of Saltzman's library in her Halfmoon, New York home.
Raniere would allegedly punish women who had sex with people who weren't him, at one point keeping a woman prisoner for 18 months in the home of one of his supporters because she pursued a romantic relationship with someone else, according to the New York Times.
Many believe Allison Mack had been brainwashed.
Many believe she had been totally brainwashed by Raniere's thinking.
"I don't think she was thinking she was actually trafficking girls," a former roommate told THR. "It doesn't mean she doesn't deserve punishment, but I think she had drunk enough Kool-Aid to really believe that these girls were going to save the world with [Raniere's] super-sperm."
Some former members even suspect she's so devoted to the cause that she'll actually take the fall for the leader, saying he had no-knowledge of the inner-circle where much of the initially reported abuse and branding occurred.
"If Allison testifies that Keith didn't know, that's a crock of shit," Barbara Bouchey, a former girlfriend of Raniere who left NXIVM in 2009, said.

Accused Nxivm sex cult leader Keith Raniere’s teachings to his female followers included discussions of sex with children as young as 12, according to a disturbing video shown Wednesday in his sex trafficking trial.



“In some parts of the world, the age of consent is 17. In other parts of the world, the age of consent is 12,” Raniere wrote in a sermon delivered to members of his women’s-only group Jness.



The statement, read on the tape by Nxivm co-founder Nancy Salzman, sent a gasp through her students and the Brooklyn federal courtroom — where Raniere is facing charges of raping a 15-year-old girl.



On Tuesday, prosecutors said the alleged victim would go on to become his first “sex slave.”



Raniere also has been accused, though never charged, with raping a girl hundreds of times when she was 12 and 13 years old.



“Is the person a child, or is the person adult-like?” Salzman read to the group, which met once a month with the co-founder they knew as “Prefect.”



The discussion that month centered around how women use abuse and blame to get what they want, former “sex slave” Sylvie testified.



The 32-year-old previously testified she had been part of the group for a decade when she was recruited into a secret master-slave society called DOS, which had been pitched as a women’s empowerment group but was secretly headed by “grand master” Raniere.



“I think we were all like, ‘Whoa,’ regarding the age of consent being 12,” Sylvie told jurors. “Now it doesn’t make sense, but we’d always just agree.”



In the video, Salzman tells the group “abuse is a human construct,” and that women use false claims of abuse as a “rip-cord” in order to get their own ways.



The footage panned around the room to show a pensive-looking Sylvie and more than 20 others — including alleged sex slaves and women Sylvie identified as “teenagers.”



It’s unclear when the video was shot.



Other tenets taught in Jness, a series of courses available to Nxivm members, included the idea that women are inherently monogamous and men are, at their root, allowed to have multiple sexual partners.



Raniere is facing charges of racketeering conspiracy, including acts of child sexual exploitation and possession of child pornography.



Salzman pleaded guilty to a charge of racketeering conspiracy in March.
