Fired 1000”s of rounds through the Thompson During my time at the O/R, while it is cool and fun to shoot, it operates from an open bolt so not too accurate. Very little recoil.

NYPD RANT 1998 to THEE RANT 7/13/2017 16,575 posts and who's counting?
The M-60. One bad azzed MG in 7.62 caliber. Second choice is the H&K MP-5 suppressed.

We had the MP-5,supressed, at DSS in the 80's and they were flawless. Put 0ver 1500 rounds at Artesia and never a jam. Only negative, needs regular attention, like a woman.

Surprised that I didn't see a tried and true machine gun used by the Marines today.
Portability, reliability, punch and great push against enemy hold outs.
The M249
Then I'll take an M4 any day of the week.
For history preferences the BAR and Thompson are proven winners across half of century of conflicts.

I think we are mixing up actual machine guns and submachine guns in this thread. "Thompson submachine gun, byname Tommy gun, submachine gun patented in 1920 by its American designer, John T. Thompson. It weighed almost 10 pounds (4.5 kg) empty and fired .45-calibre ammunition. The magazine was either a circular drum that held 50 or 100 rounds or a box that held 20 or 30 rounds." www.britannica.com/technology/Thompson-submachine-gun
