Shaun White Apologizes for Dragging American Flag



Snowboarder Shaun White apologized Wednesday for dragging a U.S. flag on the snow after his dramatic gold medal victory in the men’s halfpipe, but said he did not know he had let the flag touch the ground.

“I remember being handed the flag but I was trying to put my gloves on and hold the flag and get board,” he told reporters afterward. “Honestly, if there was anything, I definitely didn’t mean any disrespect."

The problem is that many people just don't care. It isn't a big thing to these people to actively disrespect the flag that other people died for. It's just a piece of cloth to them. They'll just say they're sorry.

This guys excuse is that he was caught up in the wild emotions of the moment and didn't realize what he was doing.

That is entirely understandable but there are some things you just DON'T do.

I may win the olympics but I'm not about to step in front of a speeding train.

I'M REALLY THINKING THAT I AM GOING TO GIVE THIS KID A PASS. HE BROKE HIS BALLS TO COMPETE FOR HIS COUNTRY IN THE OLYMPICS. UNLIKE MOST OF US WHO HAVE NEVER FELT THE JOY OF WINNING A GOLD METAL WE CAN NOT KNOW WHAT HIS STATE OF MIND WAS. AS WAS SAID IN THE OPENING RANT HE HAS OFFERED AN APOLOGY FOR HIS LACK OF RESPECT AND STATED NO DISRESPECT WAS MEANT.

MOST OF US WHO HAVE MADE OUR LIVING BEING IN THE LE FIELD ARE TRULY VERSED IN THE FLAG ETIQUETTE OF OUR COUNTRY. I REALLY DON'T THINK THE ETIQUETTE OF OUR FLAG IS EVEN TAUGHT IN TODAY'S SOCIETY. IF NOTHING ELSE THIS CAN BEING A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR MILLIONS IN THIS COUNTRY OF HOW WE ARE EXPECTED TO HONOR OUR FLAG.

GOOD LUCK MISTER WHITE YOU HAVE DID WELL FOR YOUR TEAM AND YOUR COUNTRY.

Then shame on his parents. My children each know how to properly take care of a US Flag because I thought it was important for them to know that it wasn't "just a flag". An adult should know how to show respect to his Nation's flag period. Fuck up Shaun White!

When i was in 6th grade i and another of my schoolmates were designated to raise the flag every morning before class and take it down at dismissal. I took that assignment seriously, my classmate and i would take great care how we handled the flag and we treated it with the the respect and reverence it deserves. We would even leave class if the weather got bad and would take the flag down and it never touched the ground ever! My point is if an 11 year old kid can treat the flag of our country then an Olympic athlete that is chosen to represent our country should absolutely know how to handle the flag. And if he wamts to claim ignorance or say he was caught up in the moment fine but i still dont think its a solid excuse. Id really like to know if before our athletes that are chosen to represent our country are being taught proper flag etiquette by US Olympic officials before they gp to a foreign country to represent us.
