I can get a bullshit, no-frills phone for $20 if I had to have one, why would someone willingly carry their tracking device?

So, they are getting an IPhone, and a tablet to replace the memobooks. And they will also be carrying their personal cell phones on them. Thank God the job lets them wear BDU's. The Red Menace strikes again.

If you think you can disable location settings on that phone, I highly doubt it. Big brother just got a free ticket to ride in a cop’s pocket.

Didn't a Detective who worked in the 70 many years ago (Mid 90's) get jammed up using a department cell phone to contact tow companies on the d/l when he was working SP-10 and responded to 53's?

In Baltimore, we used to have Blackberries where we could run people through NCIC. But it also had the GPS tracker on it and we called them "Trackberries". The shift commander could go to their tablet and look up your location based on the cell tower triangulation. After Blackberry fell out of favor, we went with Android phones. No one looks up your location anymore, but it doesn't mean that it cannot be done. We still call them Trackberries, despite the change in OS.
Despite the resistance of it from many cops, it's a nice tool to have. I can do so much on it and not have to rely on the dispatcher to do things for me. I take pics and categorize them. I can run NCIC and check departmental email. I can do other things that weren't possible 5 years ago. It's a wonderful tool to have, as long as you know how to use its advantages in your favor and don't do stupid shit on it.

Before I retired 4 years ago I was given the dubious honor of carrying one of those handheld devices. You could run warrants, NCIC, Triple I, DMV, etc. It wasn’t the fastest device. It was easier to call the office and have someone run the info on a computer. The kicker was that it was a pilot program that was being monitored by the deputy PC’s office. They would raise holy hell if they noticed the device wasn’t being used at least 5 times a day. That damn thing became a thorn in my side. Hurricane Sandy blew into town and the handheld wen down with the ship. I left it in our unmarked van parked at Edgewater Plaza, Staten Island. The storm surge engulfed the parking lot and turned RMPs into pontoon boats. All the contents in the van were sucked out to sea, thus solving my dilemma.

We had 4 Nextel Ms that were just sitting in a draw not being used so I "borrowed" for an OP that me team was conducting and four later we returned them. They were 1000x times better that using a dept radio.

thirty six thousand phones and a department size of 34,000. something fishy about that. all the gold in them former phones adds up to some good coin. so to will this.
