Before I retired 4 years ago I was given the dubious honor of carrying one of those handheld devices. You could run warrants, NCIC, Triple I, DMV, etc. It wasn’t the fastest device. It was easier to call the office and have someone run the info on a computer.
The kicker was that it was a pilot program that was being monitored by the deputy PC’s office. They would raise holy hell if they noticed the device wasn’t being used at least 5 times a day.
That damn thing became a thorn in my side. Hurricane Sandy blew into town and the handheld wen down with the ship.
I left it in our unmarked van parked at Edgewater Plaza, Staten Island. The storm surge engulfed the parking lot and turned RMPs into pontoon boats. All the contents in the van were sucked out to sea, thus solving my dilemma.
