In Baltimore, we used to have Blackberries where we could run people through NCIC. But it also had the GPS tracker on it and we called them "Trackberries". The shift commander could go to their tablet and look up your location based on the cell tower triangulation. After Blackberry fell out of favor, we went with Android phones. No one looks up your location anymore, but it doesn't mean that it cannot be done. We still call them Trackberries, despite the change in OS.
Despite the resistance of it from many cops, it's a nice tool to have. I can do so much on it and not have to rely on the dispatcher to do things for me. I take pics and categorize them. I can run NCIC and check departmental email. I can do other things that weren't possible 5 years ago. It's a wonderful tool to have, as long as you know how to use its advantages in your favor and don't do stupid shit on it.
