The same stories about the lack of infrastructure maintenance were reported going into the 1970s, and certainly after the layoffs in 1975, at which time, even inspections (much less repairs) were discontinued.
And, yes, bridges were closed, in whole or in part, because of the danger. Similar to what we're reading here, about the BQE.
And if anyone thinks this clown deBlasio or Cuomo the Paranoid have "bridge and highway maintenance" on their "to-do" list, they are sadly mistaken. You can't get votes from the Great Unwashed for fixing a bridge, but you can if you increase their monthly welfare and maintain their Medicaid payments, and blame "pensions" for the shortfall.
As they say on the radio traffic reports, what everyone should do now is, "Consider alternate routes...."
