I was a navy corpsman stationed most of my 12 yrs with the Marine Corps. Having a foot in each service has been a living honor that I hold dear in my heart.
As for the NYPD MC/Navy associations, your last paragraph summed it up pretty well. NYPD cops tend to be a shell of what they once were in by gone days. That shell is fossilized into what ever shape they were hammered into. This job tends to inject bad attitudes and habits.
When I went to the academy, We were told that this is a paramilitary organization, fashioned after military traditions and honor. The only thing I see is a requirement of uniforms and ten yrs later, am still waiting for some assemblance of military order on this job. Heck, I dont even see cops saluting supervisors, instead I see them joking and slapping each other on the back as if this is some college fraternity.
So, you gave it a good try to get some assistance and support from these organizations, but I hope you realize that its just another fraternal organization in which when they have a function, one can put in a 28 for the day off.
Thank you for your service and charitable support for our men and women in our nation's cherished uniform. I will buy your books and gladly read and display them on my coffee table, and start a conversation with my visitors regarding the good will you have started.
I served on the USS Tarawa myself for 6 months, and for those who never served aboard a ship as a sailor or marine, you missed out on some really great times, port of calls, westpacs or med floats. Thats the kind of comraderie that you will never let go of. Thats the place where you learn real teamwork and brotherhood.
Do not be angry at those "associations". They know not what they do!
Semper Fi.
