I was surprised when I recently found out that there are no more enlisted clubs on base. Back in my day 88-92 you could drink on base at 18. The thinking was if they are going to drink let them do it here where we can keep an eye on them. The 18-year drinking age applied to girls that would come in from off base. Drinking in the navy was a tradition, even the base laundry facilities had beer available. I don’t think I have ever seen a beer machine (a pop machine that dispenses beer) any other place besides a navy base. Shore patrol was a collateral duty on the ships that I was on and it was a hell of a good time! In a port we would get a rental van to transport the drunks back to the ship. You were given a walkie talkie and a club and had zero training. I spent one night patrolling a raunchy strip club in Haifa Israel, it was rough duty, LOL. The next night when you were on liberty it was you being thrown into the back of the van! Back in Norfolk they had the “roach coach” that came down the pier that sold 40-ounce beers and porno mags! Instead of having lunch on the ship we would often have a liquid lunch on the pier or the parking lot while perusing the latest hustler magazine! Such fond memories...
