Under normal circumstances, I would think that this was a serious offense.
But the Sheas and Monahans of 1PP could have come up with a substantially LESS punishment, nowhere near suspension, and no one (except, maybe, deBlasio) would have complained.

After all the publicity about cops and the virus, and the number of cops out sick, lack of equipment, etc., they could have said that the cop was "under a lot of stress," which manifested itself in this, and let it go with a CD (if that).
Unfortunately, this is a precursor of what will happen under the present cowardly NYPD administration if something more serious occurs (think Barry & Panteleo).
