Take a look at your barrel . If it is stamped 5.56, you can use both. If not, stick with .223 only.
Ruger owner manuals state the .223 marked barrels are actually designed to fire both .223 and 5.56 and I can attest hundreds of thousands of 5.56 rounds have exited my 1989 era rifle without issue.
