The Cars The Cars - a perfect album. Great music in the vast wasteland of 80s music. Ocasek was the reason why ugly boys wanted to be in a rock band. He looked like Icabod Crane but scored Paulina the supermodel as his wife!!! Thanks Rick for the great music! R.I.P. dude and rock on! I think there was a lot of good music of the ‘80s, just most of it wasn’t played on mainstream radio. There was also very few good bands, The Cars were the exception, most good songs came from 1hit wonders. MTV responsible somewhat. When it started there was not enough material from mainstream artists. So many new wave bands were able to be seen by just submitting a video. Haircut 100, Split Enz, and many others capitalized on the video music that was taking off like crack and making stars out of unknowns (coincidentally, like YouTube has been doing past few years for amateurs ) I tired of the hairbands with a couple exceptions and continued listening to traditional rock (although I did like the heavier stuff like Maiden, Dokken, Metallica, etc). But I became a big fan of the MTV music of that day too. Symbolic of the mindless, carefree, and excess of the party hard 80's. Some bands were actually quite good like the Cars. The Fixx, INXS, Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls all had some longevity and uniqueness. Great times, great memories.
