We went out every day and night on patrol. Most times the civilians we interacted with, didn’t treat us very well. But I will never forget the kindness of my Brothers. Many years ago, I was riding my Harley., in Suffolk County. Suddenly an illegal alien driving a big GMC truck hit me then instead of stopping, she hit the gas , and hit me again. She fled the scene, left me in the roadway. A Suffolk PD cop grabbed her a block away. Meanwhile two Emergency service cops , who were my friends responded to the scene. They loaded me into the helicopter, I went down and they brought me back with the difibillator. In the ER I bled out and received 30 units of blood. My left leg, ankle and both shoulders were shattered. I was paralyzed for the first 8 months, on a feeding tube and remained hospitalized for 17 months....however NOT A DAY OR NIGHT went by in all that time was I ever alone. My family and my family of blue were with me through it all. Guys showed up in the morning after a late tour, with bagels for the staff. .after the 4x12 the guys brought pizzas for all the midnight staff. I would thank each and everyone of my Brothers, and they said don't you remember when you did this for me? I never felt that friendship was a scale you did this now I have do that. I just did what was right, and it paid me back a thousand times over. My heart pumps BLUE blood. Please safe safe! Lucky...2 thoughts come to mind. 1. You and I are BOTH very fortunate. You are LUCKY because you lived and got to tell this tale, and I am LUCKY because I got to hear you tell it. 2. ALL OF US, uniformed, civilian or citizen supporters are fortunate to be part of this BLUE family. EVP, if LUCKY would consent... this story should be anchored to the top of the board, and should be a required read for every rookie. I’d go one better and tell LUCKY to tell your tale to a journalist and memorialized somehow. Thank you for YOUR service, Lucky...and to all of you on here.
